Zimbabwean Footballer Racially Abused In Europe

Zimbabwean international footballer, Martin Mapisa, was a victim of racist abuse at a game in Spain on Saturday.

The Warriors goalkeeper is currently on loan at UD Llanera, from Zamora CF, which expires on 30 June.

Posting on Twitter after the incident, Mapisa said footballers face challenges in foreign countries. He tweeted:

Sometimes it’s very difficult with our career in a foreign country, we are just trying to make our dreams come true and to make our family and our loved ones happy so that we can have a better and happy life. We just pray for strength and a very good heart.

Thank you for your encouragement @palenciacristo_.NO TO RACISM.

Meanwhile, Palencia Cristo Atletico apologised to Mapisa and promised to investigate the incident. The club said in a social media post:

We want to ask for forgiveness from Martín Mapisa for the incidents last Saturday.

We ask for co-operation to identify (those) responsible for the deplorable behaviour.

MEASURES WILL BE TAKEN, #saynotoracism #blacklivesmatters.

Mapisa is yet to nail down a place in the Warriors’ starting eleven, with former national team coach Norman Mapeza selecting Petros Mhari as the first-choice goalkeeper at the 2021 AFCON finals.

Mapisa was one of the three players who never got a chance to play at the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon.

The others are Scotland-based striker David Moyo and Altrincham defender Alec Mudimu.
