Zimbabwe Weather Report & Forecast: 23 To 25 May 2022

The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection.

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON MONDAY 23 MAY 2022 VALID UNTIL WEDNESDAY 25 MAY 2022.

PREAMBLE

It was cloudy and mild in Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Masvingo yesterday, with rain in areas such as Rusape (12mm), Chipinge (9mm) and Mutoko (8mm).

It cleared countrywide overnight, leading to chilly morning conditions with a severe ground frost in Matopos (-03°C), and moderate ground frost in Kezi (-01°C), as well as slight ground frost in areas around Bulawayo, Gweru, Harare, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Lupane, Marondera, Nyanga, Plumtree, Tsholotsho and West Nicholson.

FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, TUESDAY 24 MAY 2022

Cold morning conditions are expected across the whole country with ground frost being a possibility in frost-prone areas such as Matopos, Kezi, Gweru, Masvingo, Chivhu, Marondera and Nyanga Sunny and warm conditions should dominate the afternoon, becoming cold towards evening.

IMPACTS

  • Ground frost is probable in areas such as Matopos, Henderson, Marondera, Nyanga and Chivhu.
  • Veldt fires tend to be rampant during this period and can destroy vast tracts of land and property as well as pose a threat to human and animal life.
  • Temperature fluctuations between night and day may affect the body’s health, with common colds, influenza and fever as well as asthma being common. Animals and plants may also be affected.
  • Nights, when the sky is clear, are actually much colder than those where cloudy conditions persist.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • Outdoor events for this weekend may need to be under a tent considering the rain expected over the southern parts of the country.
  • Dress appropriately to keep warm especially overnight, and ensure vulnerable members of society are warm as well.
  • Crops or harvests that may be affected by rainfall should be placed in suitable locations or covered.
  • Poultry producers should note that broilers are sensitive to temperature variations and therefore need to be checked regularly and adjustments made.
  • Farmers in areas prone to ground frost should under-bake frost prevention measures such as overhead irrigation of crops usually at night /early in the morning.
