Zimbabwe Weather Report & Forecast: 01 To 03 January 2022

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON SATURDAY 01 JANUARY 2022 VALID UNTIL MONDAY 03 JANUARY 2022.

PREAMBLE

The cloud system which was over the country yesterday was a relief to Harare residents and those to the northern areas such as Mashonaland East, Central and West who experienced afternoon thunderstorms and overnight rain on Friday 31 December 2021 into Saturday 01 January 2022.

Notable rainfalls in excess of 30mm measured this morning: 99mm (Harare Southerton), 83mm (Harare Belvedere). 77mm (Marirangwe), 68mm (Harare Warren Park), 51 mm (Harare Logan Park), 36mm (Kanyemba), 33mm (Dotito), 32mm (Kadoma) and 30mm (Chimhanda).

FORECAST FOR SUNDAY 02 JANUARY 2022:

Cloudy conditions with scattered thunderstorms are expected in Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, northern parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, all Mashonaland Provinces and Manicaland Province.

It should be mild at first becoming warm by afternoon. All other areas (Matabeleland South, south areas of Midlands and Masvingo Provinces) are anticipated to be mostly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon thundershowers, but mild both morning and evening.

IMPACTS

  • Lightning and hailstorms are a major risk during this period.
  • Localized heavy downpours remain probable.
  • Strong winds may blow off roofs and damage property.
  • Most thunderstorms occur between mid-morning and evening hours, with afternoons being peak periods.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • When thunder roars, go indoors. Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the thunderstorms have ended. These are precautionary measures to reduce the chances of being struck by lightning.
  • Note that lightning can strike from a large distance; thus if you can hear thunder within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, then you are close enough to get struck. Go into a vehicle or a house.
  • Do not ride at the back of an open vehicle or ox-drawn cart during a thunderstorm.
  • Avoid contact with water or metal objects including farming equipment when lightning is visible, even from a distance.
  • Insure crops against adverse weather such as hailstorms.
  • Be Weather-ready; always plan with the weather in mind.

  • Matopos: Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms (Temperatures – 19/32)
  • Chimanimani: Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms (Temperatures – 19/28)

Scattered thunderstorms are expected in Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, northern parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, all Mashonaland Provinces and Manicaland.
