Zimbabwe Relegated To Group 3 Of Davis Cup Tennis

Zimbabwe have been relegated to Group 3 of Davis Cup tennis after a 3-1 loss to El Salvador in the World Group 2 playoff at Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

Today the Lock brothers lost the doubles rubber 2-1 and Mehluli Sibanda lost to Marcelo Arevalo.

The loss ends Zimbabwe’s four-year spell in Group 2.

The Southern African country needed a win to stay in contention in the tie after ending the first day at one but crumbled on the final day as they lost two matches and eventually went down 3-1 in the tie after deciding not to play the dead rubber.

Lock brothers, Benjamin and Courtney were first onto the court this morning for the doubles against Lluis Miralles and Marcelo Arevalo and gave the nation hope after picking up the first set 6-4.

After 30 minutes Benjamin Lock, largely expected to beat his lower-ranked opponent, went down to Marcelo Arevalo 3-6 7-5 6-4 and condemned the country to group three after the sides decided against playing the dead rubber.

Zimbabwe will now be playing in the Davis Cup group three for the year 2022.
