Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University In Enrolment Scandal

Some top officials at Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) in Bindura have been accused of selling fake admission letters to aspiring students.

This came out at the High Court where three students, Victor Madzivanyika, Cleopatra Gumbo and Norman Tafadzwa Mashayamombe, who all intended to study for a Bachelors of Laws degree were seeking an order to be allowed back in the programme despite the disclosure.

NewZimbabwe.com reports that the trio was turned away from the institution after this discovery.

Their application for reinstatement at the High Court was dismissed by Judge Happias Zhou who ruled the three had used “the back door.” Reads the judgment:

The applicant (Madzivanyika) did not write such a test, which means that his admission was irregular for want of compliance with a mandatory procedure. Madzivanyika  states, but leads no evidence to prove, that no written test was given to the other mature entry applicants. This disputed allegation does not sanitise his  admission.

Whoever gave him the offer letter was, therefore, conniving with the him, and only added him to the list of students after the selection process had been completed.

The first aspect is the very existence of loopholes in the admission system, which can be manipulated in the manner revealed by the two cases.

The second aspect is the number of admitted students who do not have a Grade B or better in English Language at Ordinary Level.

Justice Zhou also observed that:

a). There were 16 people who had Grade C in English Language when the institution’s regulations stated that applicants for normal and special entry students needed Grade B or better.

b). The regulations also state that not more than five applicants may be admitted through the mature entry procedure in any intake.

c). The requirements for admission through the mature entry were not stated making the system vulnerable to abuse.

Zhou said the integrity of the qualification and education system must be jealously guarded.
