Zimbabwe Cannot Be Taught Democracy By Its Erstwhile Oppressors - ED

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said Western powers cannot teach democracy to Zimbabweans because they oppressed the country and denied its citizens the right to self-determination for decades.

In his address to the nation at the 42nd Heroes Day Commemorations held at the National Heroes Acre on Monday, Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe attained democracy through a protracted armed struggle. He said:

In line with my administrationÔÇÖs commitment to upholding the democracy bequeathed to us by our fallen heroes and heroines, Zimbabwe is unrelenting in its pursuit to entrench constitutionalism, the rule of law, and good governance and respect for human rights.

We cannot be taught democracy by those who denied us democracy. The heroes we honour fought for democracy and the equal access to justice we are enjoying as a country.

Let us, therefore, individually and collectively, protect it from all forms of abuse and desecration, more so, by those who never came to our help during the brutal oppressive years under white settler colonial regime.

Albeit as a peace-loving nation, Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none.

The United States, Britain and their allies imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the Millenium citing the breakdown of the rule of law and violation of human rights.

However, the ZANU PF-led government insists the Western countries imposed sanctions to punish Zimbabweans for repossessing land from white farmers and redistributing it to the landless black majority.

Dumb take... Democracy is an idea. It doesn't belong to the west or does Communism belong to the east

Therefore u will relentlessly suppress any dissenting voices. You will unashamedly rig elections. You will use the army and police to beat innocent citizens. You will abuse human rights coz u don't care what the world says. Under the guise of sanctions u now have the passport to loot and perpetrate lawlessness. I witnessed your cadres in Chegutu driving recklessly and parking Zanu Pf branded cars in the middle of road. They don't Stop at robot controlled intersections coz they believe they are a law unto themselves. We will celebrate when u are gone. And go u will.

Butt I think that the same land should be taken from those who are not using it and be given to those who can utilise it productively. That's it!!!

Society evolves. Social values change. Political structures evolve and change. Nothing remains static, just as people are born, grow, age and die.

Pre-colonial political structures were not democratic in Africa as elsewhere. Even in Feudal Europe, democracy didn't exist. Communism, Capitalism, Democracy all evolved because of socio-economic and socio-political transformations. Even social values change. Once upon a time, both Europe, Africa and indeed the rest of the world was once patriarchal and male-dominated societies. Now gender equality is the buzzword. Change is the only constant.

Africa did not invent democracy. Chieftainships in pre-colonial societies were not democratic. Neither were Feudal systems in pre-industrial Europe. To say that we colonial systems can't teach us democracy is fallacious, because they were the ones who brought electoral systems to Africa, whether we want to acknowledge that or not.

There was never ONE-MAN-ONE-VOTE prior to colonialism. Nor would it have been without colonialism
