ZANU PF MP Urges Govt To Give Pensioners, War Veterans US$200 Per Month

ZANU PF MP Urges Govt To Give Pensioners, War Veterans US$200 Per Month

Umzingwane legislator Levi Mayihlome (ZANU PF) has urged the government to pay pensioners including war veterans a minimum of US$200 in monthly pensions.

Mayihlome’s call for US dollar pensions comes hardly a month after a group of disgruntled ex-combatants were arrested after protesting in central Harare demanding an upward review of their monthly stipends.

In his contribution to a motion in reply to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and the presidential speech on the official opening of the Fourth Session of the Ninth Parliament, Mayihlome said ex-combatants and other pensioners were living like paupers. Mayihlome said:

The pension should at least be reviewed upwards to a minimum of about US$200 per month for all pensioners, including war veterans so that at least they have a decent life.

I would want to talk about the National Social Security Authority pensions.  My plea is that the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare ministry needs to review these pensions.

They reviewed it upwards from US$15 to US$45 and now it is going to be US$60 per month per individual, but who can live on US$60 per month?

These are people who have contributed to the development of this country. They worked hard all their lives. They toiled making major investments, some of which have been the pride of this country, yet we expect them to live on US$60 per month. It’s not fair.

Last year, the government adjusted pensions for the former freedom fighters to cushion them against the rising cost of living but inflation has left many failing to afford basics.

Meanwhile, civil servants have been pushing for the restoration of the US$540 average earned before October 2018 but the government says the demand cannot be met due to the scarcity of foreign currency.

The government promised to periodically increase their salaries. Some workers, including teachers, are earning an average of US$100.

WHERE IS THE GOVERNMENT GOING TO GET THAT MONEY TO GIVE THE WAR VETS?.

YOU ARE ONLY LOOKING AT WAR VETS, WHAT ABOUT TEACHERS,SOLDIERS, NURSES AND OTHER CIVIL SERVANTS?.

$200 USD PER VETERAN WILL COST A COUNTRY HOW MUCH PER YEAR AND AMOUNT WAS BETTER TO BUILD MORE CLINICS AND SCHOOLS.

$60 USD IS TOO MUCH FOR THE OLD CADRE THAT IS UNDER HIS CHILDREN, COUSINS AND NEPHEWS SUPPORT.

THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING FOR WORK EVERYDAY BUT THEY ARE NOT GETTING THAT MUCH NOW WHY COMPLAINING?.

WHO EMPLOYED THE WAR VETS?. WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DID THEY GOT AT THE WAR BASES?.
SOME OF DID NOT EVEN HOLD A GUN BUT THEY ARE EARNING. MOST VETERANS BEING INTERVIEWED ON ZBC RADIO ZIMBABWE WITNESSED THAT THEY WERE CHOIR GUYS AND LADIES WITHOUT GUNS.
SOME WERE BEING USED TO WASH CLOTHES FOR THE COMMANDERS

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A FOLLOW UP ON HOW MANY SOLDIERS SURVIVED AT THE BASE OF CHIMOYO, YOU WILL SEE THAT LESS THAN 200 SOLDIERS SURVIVED

BUT IF WE GO THE PENSION NOW YOU GET MORE THAN 6000 WAR VETERANS EARNING BUT ALL WILL TELL YOU THAT THEY WERE AT CHIMOIO

NOT ALL OF THEM ARE WAR VETERANS, SOME ARE FAKE WAR VETERANS,SOME ARE POLITICAL COMMISSAR TRAINNED AT BORDER GEZI, ALL CRYING IN THE NAME OF WAR VETERANS.

THERE ARE YOUTH COMMISSAR ALSO EARNING IN THE NAME OF WAR VETERANS

IF THE GOVERNMENT SAYS, IT IS ALSO STRUGGLING TO CASH AVAILABILITY IN THE COUNTRY, THESE WAR CADRES DOES NOT LISTEN.

DO YOU MEAN THE SOLDIERS, POLICE, TEACHERS AND NURSES THAT KEEPING QUITE THEY EARN A LOT TO MONEY?.

WE ALL NEED MONEY AFTER WORK. DOES VOLUNTARY WORK PAYS?.

YES, YOU VOLUNTEED TO WORK FOR YOUR COUNTRY, SO ITS UP TO THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY TO JUDGE HOW MUCH WILL YOU BE PAID BECAUSE YOU ARE A VOLUNTEER.

THEY ARE LOTS OF HUMAN BODIES BURRIED IN NYADZONIA, CHIMOYO AND SOME DIED OF HUNGER, SOME WERE DEVOURED BY LIONS,SOME WE BITTEN BY SNAKES AND SOME WERE POISONED IN FOOD AND WATER ON THEIR WAYS TO MOZAMBIQUE, TANZANIA, MALAWI,ETC BUT THEIR FAMILIES DID NOT GET EVEN A SHILLING SO WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING?.

WE ALSO WANT THAT MONEY IF COMES TO WAR ISSUES.
OUR CATTLE WERE BEING STOLEN BY THESE NOW WAR VETS. WE USED TO AMBUSH THEM, GIVING THEM FOOD CLOTHES AND ETCETERA FOR THEM TO LIVE, WERE WE NOT ALSO FIGHTING FOR THE COUNTRY AND THEN WHERE ARE WE GETTING OUR PENSION.

WE WERE BEATEN BY WHITES BECAUSE OF OUR COVER-UPS TO HELP THEM DISAPPEAR FROM DANDER ZONES, WERE WE NOT FIGHTING?
WHERE IS OUR PENSION?

IF IS THAT LET THE GOVT PAY ALL ABOVE 55YRS OF AGE SOME PENSION BECAUSE THEY ALSO STRUGGLED FOR THIS ZIMBABWE.

NOT TO JUST COMPLAIN AFTER LOTS OF LAND AND MONEY YOU ARE GETTING, THEY ARE SOME WHO DESERVE TO EARN AGAIN BUT THEY ARE KEEPING QUITE.

IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY DID NOT SUFFER THE HEAT OF RHODES AND HIS IAN SMITH.

THE COUNTRY HAS NO FOREX PLEASE.
