ZACC Impounds Nine Buses For Smuggling

ZACC Impounds Nine Buses For Smuggling

Nine buses have been impounded by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for smuggling goods and people across the country’s borders.

In a statement Thursday, ZACC said smuggled goods, which included alcohol and bags of clothes were recovered. ZACC said:

Some of the smuggled goods found on the buses include an assortment of alcoholic drinks, blankets, bags containing new clothes, shoes, washing powder and energy drinks worth hundreds of thousands of US dollars.

The bus crews and passengers failed to produce ZIMRA declaration forms.

ZACC would like to thank whistleblowers for their continued support in exposing corruption and urge parliament and the ministry of justice to expedite the completion of the public interest disclosure (protection of whistleblowers) bill, 2022 whose principles were approved by cabinet recently.

The buses were impounded under an ongoing anti-smuggling operation which kicked off on April 14.

Police have been warning bus operators and crew against smuggling saying they were posing a security risk with the border jumpers whom they are carrying into the country.

Some of the ferried border jumpers would commit crimes in Zimbabwe or would be running away from South African authorities after committing crimes.

Smuggling goods and people also militates against the Government’s quest to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

So sad, these people try to earn a living by importing goods from SA, we all know that it's illegal to cross boarder without declaring goods but I think it's better because you did not steal anyones property.

I think this is the cause of all robbery cases in the country

even declared goods the numerous roadblocks will humble you

police will extort you by miscellaneous offences like mixing, unsecured luggage, unroadworthy vehicles

so you will be burned at the boarder by the duty, onroad they will make you bribe all the way up

Zimra takes bribes at the boarder and then inform their other guys to follow and ask 4 bribes or else impound.

The real culprit here is the Government which pays ZIMRA officers peanuts resulting in corrupt activities to augument their meagre salaries. Secondly ZIMRA is short staffed so that if they search every bus t****ughly, they may take 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes to clear one bus. The buck goes back to Government which does not pay its workers well.
