The opposition MDC has refuted social media claims that the party’s property has been disposed of after it failed to field candidates in less than half of the 210 constituencies and its presidential candidate Douglas Mwonzora withdrew from the race.

In a statement, MDC Treasurer-General Brian Dube said the party’s property is safe and is being safeguarded by the party’s leadership. Reads the statement:

_Over the past few days, social media has been awash with news that the party property has been disposed of._

_This news is completely false and was deliberately meant to bring ill-feeling against the leadership._

_We have traced these false statements to bitter former top leadership who have since left the party._

_The information is also meant to justify the violence that these people were inciting against top leaders of the party through social media._

_Our leaders are men and women of integrity who have safeguarded party property for years._

_The people’s property is safe. The people’s project is being reset and there is no going back._

Since the court reconstructed the MDC through a controversial court ruling in March 2020, the once-formidable party has failed to win a single seat.
