The TIMB also revealed that the prices of the golden leaf on the international market firmed to US$4.53 per kg in 2022 from US$4.00 per kg in 2021. In 2021, Zimbabwe earned US$819.7 million after exporting 183.6 million kg of tobacco. However, according to TIMB, for every US$1 earned, US$0.85 is going to merchants with farmers earning US$0.15. Approximately more than 90% of the tobacco farmers in Zimbabwe are under tobacco merchants’ contracts.
