*Zimbabwe: COVID-19 Hospital Admissions Escalate*

Zimbabwe in the recent past recorded a surge in the number of COVID-19 admissions due to relaxed preventive measures.

During a post-Cabinet media briefing, Information and Publicity Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, also stated that although there were reported COVID-19 cases in schools, they were not severe. Said the Senator:

_During the week under review, the number of people in need of hospitalisation for Covid-19 increased and the bed occupancy rate increased from 2% last week to 3,2% this week._

_A total of 81 new admissions were recorded during the week compared to 51 which occurred last week. No patient was admitted to the intensive care unit._

*Latest developments:*

_There has been huge complacency in Zimbabwe as the Southern African country has been recording no death cases in the recent past._

_With over four million people already vaccinated with at least one jab, some believe that the country has already achieved herd immunity._

_Authorities are, however, urging citizens to take the booster jab to increase the chances of fighting the virus._

*World Perspective:*

_On Monday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) urged countries not to declare victory over the coronavirus even though COVID-19 deaths had significantly dropped globally._

_WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said it was too early for countries to declare victory as some countries still had high hospitalisation rates, adding that people should not be complacent._

_Ghebreyesus said the threat of new and more dangerous variants remains very real due to transmissions._

_He added that people should continue to protect themselves._
