This followed the detection of a new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, in South Africa. The variant has since been detected in Belgium, Botswana, Israel and Hong Kong. On Friday, November 26, 2021Qatar Airways announced that “passengers will no longer be accepted for travel from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique” on its flights. The airline stated that this decision will be effective immediately and will review the situation on a daily basis. This Saturday, November 27, 2021, the airline tweeted that the ban will now include passengers from Mozambique as well.
