He was among the first freedom fighters to inspire the armed struggle after smuggling weapons into the then Southern Rhodesia in 1962 to wage war against the racist settler regime. He was part of ZAPU’s Special Affairs High Command where he served as Chief of Personnel and Training. Lt-Gen Chimonyo, who was the commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), died on Thursday morning after battling cancer. He was 69. Chakabva, who was a member of the ZANLA High Command, and at one time commander of the Gaza province, died on 6 July after a long illness. He was recruited by Nikita Mangena and Joseph Khumalo to go and train under ZAPU in Morogoro, Tanzania. Chakabva later defected from ZAPU and joined ZANU then under Ndabaningi Sithole. In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage said President Mnangagwa, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga and ZANU PF Vice-President and Second Secretary Kembo Mohadi will be among the few top Government officials that will attend the double burial at the national shrine, in line with COVID-19 protocols. Only 20 people from each family and selected Government officials will attend the burial ceremony while others will follow it on virtual platforms. *More: Chronicle* _If you found this article useful_ *Please support Pindula by forwarding to friends and groups*
