After demobilisation at the end of the war in 1980, the war veterans were offered jobs of their choice, pensions, free medical aid, state-assisted funerals, school fees for their children and farms. Chiredzi Town Council vice-chairperson, Ropafadzo Makumire told a full council meeting on Monday that the local authority has allocated the land to the children of the war veterans. Meanwhile, United Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Josphat Tizirai said the children of war veterans should follow the same procedures of going on the waiting list to acquire stands. Council chairman Gibson Hwende said the war veterans’ children made an application and council had secured the land. Said Hwende: > This is historical, they applied for land so that they will be recognized as children of war veterans. We have identified land for them in Melbourne Park. Council secretary Charles Muchatikwa said the beneficiaries will pay for the stands. In September last year, war veterans demanded that the government award them honorary degrees for their role in the liberation struggle. Here are some of the demands made by war veterans in recent years: University degrees Tax rebates for their suppliers Pension Medical and dental care Educational Assistance Funeral Assistance Gratuity Clear categorization of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle members Tax and Duty exemption Quota system in Parliament and all government institutions and agencies Automatic promotion of serving veterans of the liberation struggle in State institutions Diplomatic passports Bravery medals and new identity cards Compensation of war victims and veterans of the liberation struggle living with disabilities *More: Masvingo Mirror* _If you found this article useful_ *Please support Pindula by forwarding to friends and groups*
