The Zimbabwean government on Friday extended the lockdown by a further 14 days after an increasing number of people tested positive for COVID-19 after the last few days.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that the lockdown will be relaxed to Level 2, with more activities deemed non-essential now permissible.

Regarding the education sector, President Mnangagwa said relevant stakeholders have been consulted, for example, teachers unions, parents and so forth and deliberations are ongoing

He added that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, will work closely with the Health Ministry on how best health fundamentals are first met before the reopening schools.

Announcement of reopening dates will be made at the appropriate time but for now, schools remain closed, the President further said.

President Mnangagwa said the reopening strategy will give priority to those sitting for final exams, that is, Grade 7, Form 4 and Form 6 classes and the relevant ministries will ensure that students continue to have access to educational resources.

Schools and tertiary institutions (colleges, polytechnics and universities) closed on Tuesday, 24 March 2020, as a precaution against the outbreak and spread of the novel coronavirus.

Schools were scheduled to reopen on 5 May for the second but this will not happen following President Mnangagwa’s announcement.
