It is always a business transaction. The alleged deal comes when Zimbabwe has an energy crisis that has seen many areas going without power for about 18 hours during the peak of the crisis. Dangarembga’s remarks come when China is being criticised across the world for its unsustainable loans to which have landed many developing countries in unserviceable debts. Resultantly, receiving countries end up losing their mineral resources and control over the extraction of those resources, a scenario which some describe as tantamount to neocolonialism. Meanwhile, many developing countries, including Zimbabwe, prefer “aid” or “loans” from China as they have “fewer strings attached” compared to those of Western states which normally “intervene in domestic affairs” of receiving countries.
