The first Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), Andrew “Sandy” Maclean has died.

General (Rtd) Maclean died at Fairways Old People’s Home in Harare aged 87. His death was confirmed by family spokesperson Rob Anderson. He said:

_Yes, he passed on the 18th of July. It was because of old age. He has been cremated. I am relaying what the family is telling me. I will have to speak to the family._

ZDF Wing Commander Donovan Muroiwa said that they were yet to be furnished with full details by the late General’s family. He said:

Maclean became the first post-independent Zimbabwe military commander when he was appointed Commander ZDF on August 8, 1981, by the then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe.

He retired from his role less than a year later, on July 31, 1982, and was replaced by the late General Solomon Mujuru from August 1, 1982.
