Grace Mugabe the former wife to the President of Zimbabwe rose to power in December 2015. This was after the Zanu PF women’s league proposed that there was a need of having two women as Vice Presidents of the party. Mugabe’s wife was the then leader of the league hence she was the potential candidate for the position.

In assuming the position of the party’s VP, she was supported by Mugabe who was depending on her since his health was deteriorating.

At one point Mugabe actually defended her when the war veterans of the party had gone against the idea of making her the party’s VP since they said that she had no war credentials.

At the end of 2015 Zanu PF was divided because there were now seperate supporters for Mujuru, Grace Mugabe, and Mnangagwa.

Grace Mugabe stayed in power for nearly two years and she was later expelled from the party together with her husband R. Mugabe.
