On this day every year, we celebrate the achievements made by women over the years in every field of human endeavour._ _This day is also a time for us to remember that the fight for equality continues, the theme for 2019 is “Balance for Better”. Gender inequality still exists in society today and is reflected in the disparity between men and women when it comes to access to resources and opportunity._ _The Constitution of Zimbabwe in section 80, enshrines the rights of women._ _(1) Every woman has full and equal dignity of the person with men and this includes equal opportunities in political, economic and social activities._ _(2) Women have the same rights as men regarding the custody and guardianship of children, but an Act of Parliament may regulate how those rights are to be exercised._ _(3) All laws, customs, traditions and cultural practices that infringe the rights of women conferred by this Constitution are void to the extent of the infringement._ _The Constitution is clear that women possess the same rights as men, and has gender equality as its core aim._ _This is embodied in this year’s theme as it is only through gender equality or “balance” that we can build a fairer society that works for everyone. Until we have true gender balance in society when it comes to opportunity, access to the nation’s resources, inheritance practices, employment, and representation in the political realm, to give some examples, we cannot have a better world._ _Women make up 52 per cent of our population but most women are at the bottom of the poverty heap._ _As we celebrate women today let us continue to fights for women’s rights and gender balance.
