*Human Rights Commission Urges Parliament To Amend Laws To Protect Civilians From Police Brutality*

THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has called on Parliament to ensure that section 210 of the Constitution is implemented and enforced to reduce growing cases of civilians being victimised by State security agents, especially during protests.

The call comes after 12 people were allegedly killed by state security agents during protests that were triggered by the government’s decision to hike fuel prices by over 150%. More than 1000 protestors were arrested countrywide. While speaking to the media on Tuesday, ZHRC commissioner Petunia Chiriseri said:

_Continued use of live ammunition on civilians by the army and police is strongly condemned and must be stopped because the loss of life and serious injuries to people is a gross violation of the most fundamental human rights as envisaged in section 48 of the Constitution._

_… Parliament must ensure implementation of section 210 of the Constitution by enacting a law of effecting mechanisms for receiving and investigating complaints from the public about the members of the security._

_We call upon the government to make assurances of non-recurrence of these human rights abuses, and the government must expedite ratification of the Convention Against Torture, Human and Degrading Treatment and Punishment._
