Former President Robert Mugabe has revealed why he resigned from power in November last year following a military intervention led by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga code-named Operation Restore Legacy.

In an exclusive interview with ITV News Africa Correspondent John Ray, Mugabe said he does not believe that he should still be Zimbabwe’s president but that his successor should have been properly elected. He says his said he resigned to save the situation and to save the people of Zimbabwe. Said Mugabe:

_My removal was forced. I had to resign in order to save the situation, and the people who advised me were saying ‘if you don’t resign there will be bloodshed, there is going to be blood shed’, and some of them were religious people so I resigned._
