A 25-year-old man from Cowdray Park in Bulawayo has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for having sexual relations with a minor that resulted in a pregnancy.

Hilson Tatenda impregnated a 14-year-old girl who was doing Form One at a local school.

Tatenda appeared before West Commonage magistrate Sibongile Marondedze last week facing charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and said he was remorseful.

Magistrate Marondedze sentenced Tatenda to 12 months in prison but suspended six months for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence.

Prosecuting, Samantha Gubede said Tatenda proposed love to the juvenile, who is a Form One pupil in September 2021 and she agreed.

The two had consensual sexual intercourse in the same month at Tatenda’s home.

The matter came to light after the teenager’s grandmother suspected that her grandchild was pregnant. She reported the matter to the police.

Tatenda was then arrested while the juvenile was taken to the hospital for a medical examination.
