Harare City Council (HCC) this week embarked on a demolishment exercise targeted at settlements and houses erected on illegally-acquired land.

This Tuesday, the Sheriff of the High Court demolished about 190 houses in Budiriro suburb after the council won 20 court orders to get rid of the illegal settlements and houses in the city.

Greenlands Housing,
Mushati Housing,

Progoti Housing, among others.

Meanwhile, the local government authority has warned land seekers to be wary of land barons who dupe them into buying land for residential purposes without official approval.

The council’s acting spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende reiterated that land seekers need to take necessary precautionary measures before purchasing any land. Speaking to the Daily News, Ruwende said:

> We would like to reiterate that home seekers must not be duped of their hard-earned money by unscrupulous individuals and must verify with the local authority before purchasing any land.

> The court orders came as a result of legal battles wherein some people/cooperatives would have settled on certain pieces of land without council authority or following proper procedures.

The unsuspecting land seekers on several occasions buy the land without due diligence and in the end, they lose both their money and the structures they would have erected.
