I’m very sorry & ashamed of having let down my beloved country. Gutu quit politics earlier this year before a Supreme Court order reversed events that resulted in the split of MDC after the death of its leader Morgan Tsvangirai. He has not returned to active politics since. In the 2018 elections, he contested as MP for Harare East but lost to MDC Alliance’s Tendai Biti. Under the current leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zanu-PF has continued to blame sanctions for the state of the country’s economy. For their part, the western governments of the US and the EU insist that sanctions have had an impact on the economy as they are targeted at individual Zanu-PF leaders.
