The committee wanted the association to account for the US$27 million it allegedly received fro the government through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to import wheat. GMAZ opted to appear before the Tendai Biti-led Parliamentary Accounts Committee adding that it never received the alleged money but actually lent its money to the government. The alleged exportation of mealie-meal is happening when the country has an acute shortage of mealie-meal due to drought and poor agricultural policies. Zimbabwe is importing maize from neighbouring countries including Tanzania. The government has also appealed to stakeholders to assist the country with food to address severe starvation in the country.
