Anti-riot police on Monday moved to quash a planned demonstration by students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) campus.

The students were protesting against lecturers’ decision to embark on a go-slow two weeks ago, citing incapacitation.

Students leader Dennis Mwashita told NewsDay that some student representatives were picked up by police for questioning. He said:

> Lecturers have been complaining about not getting their pay, so they have decided to shun evening classes.

> Conventional students are learning, but it’s just a formality. The lecturers are on a go-slow.

> We mobilised students so that they can listen to our grievances. We were actually surprised by how the information about our demo leaked.

> We were surprised to see police on the campus on Monday as soon as we started the demo.

The students vowed to continue with the protests until lectures resume.
