Gweru City Council has rejected a proposal by the local authority’s management to channel over $200 000 from its coffers to pay a private company to finish the surfacing of roads in Mkoba 16 High-density suburb.

The management requested that council advance of $217 009,13 for the rehabilitation of Moramutambara and Swazi roads while awaiting funds from ZINARA.

Council management proposed that the advance would then be recovered from the disbursement by ZINARA.

Meanwhile, mayor Josiah Makombe confirmed on Monday that he councillors had turned down the proposal. He said:

> We want to channel all the resources that we have for now towards the provision of water. I think people are aware that we have a water crisis in the city.

> The councillors felt that is our priority for now. Zinara is supposed to pay that money for the roads, so we wait until they do so and management was tasked to pursue them.

Gweru, like most cities in Zimbabwe, is battling an acute water shortage with reports indicating that the city’s main supply dam, Gwenhoro Dam, only has supplies for the next two months.

Council is frantically making efforts to source funds in order to switch to Amapongogwa Dam.
