President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly handpicked former MDC legislator for Mabvuku-Tafara, James Maridadi for a role as an ambassador.

Maridadi, who once worked at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Authority’s Radio 3 (Power FM) as a disc jockey, fell out of favour with MDC leader Nelson Chamisa soon after taking over the party reins after the death of Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018.

NewZimbabwe.com claims that Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials revealed that Maridadi is among a list of 16 prospective ambassadors who include four military generals recently retired by Mnangagwa. The sources said:

It is true Maridadi is likely to go to Senegal. He is among a list of 16 people nominated by President and set to undergo training beginning Monday. They received letters inviting them to the training sometime this week.

However, when contacted for comment, Maridadi is said professed have ignorance over the issue.

Maridadi fell out with Chamisa when he insisted on running for the Mabvuku-Tafara parliamentary seat against the party’s directive. Chamisa said then:

> I told (incumbent MP James) Maridadi to go and remove his name at Zec due to circumstances that had taken place in the party, but he did not obey.

> I realised that he is being mischievous when he was putting up posters for campaigning. It’s up to you Mabvuku, but the person we should rally behind as MDC Alliance is James Chidhakwa. The one chosen by the people is the one we should support.

Maridadi was eventually expelled from the party for insubordination.

Since entering the country’s crocodile-infested waters, Maridadi is best known for his robust debates in Parliament and became famous in 2017 when he moved the motion to impeach former President Robert Mugabe, who was to resign later that day as a result.
