According to council records, Bulawayo was declared a town on June 1, 1894. Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo said Bulawayo was declared a city in 1943. He said this while speaking at the celebrations organised by the Seventh Day Adventist Church with assistance from council, which were held at the Large City Hall.
