Uzumba Land Dispute: Mines Ministry Revokes Heijin Compnany's Mining Licence

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has cancelled certificates of registration for mining in Uzumba that had been given to a Chinese company, Heijin Mining Company (PVT) LTD. 

The move comes after protests by Uzumba villagers who alleged that they had not been consulted in the allocation of the land to the mine.

The company claims that it had not yet started any mining activities at its claim in Uzumba adding that it was still in the process of applying for the relevant licenses and certificates from the relevant government departments. Pindula News presents the ministry’s letter dated 04 November addressed to Heijin.

following complaints made to this office by Kaseke Community, Chief Nyajinya and Councillor Marova regarding registration of two blocks of base mineral claims (ME1256BM and Chibvi 2 (ME1253BM in Uzumba, this office visited the two blocks to assess the facts on the ground on 9 September 2021.

The assessment found out that the two blocks of claims were registered encompassing peoples’ homesteads and fields in Uzumba without the consent of the occupiers of the potions of that land The registration of the two blocks was therefore done on land not open to prospecting and pegging violating Section 31(1)9(11) of the Mines and Minerals Act [Chapter 21051.

In view of the above, notice is hereby given of the intention to cancel the Certificates of Registration for Kaseke (Registration Number ME1256BM) and Chibvi 2 (Registration Number ME1253BM) in terms of Section 50(1) of the Mines and Minerals Act (Chapter 21:05).

The proposed date of cancellation of the Certificates of Registration for the two blocks is 6 December 2021. You may, at any time before 6 December 2021, appeal in writing to the Minister against the cancellation.

By copy of this notice, you are hereby advised that any mining and allied operations on these two blocks are suspended with immediate effect.
