United Nations Warns Russia, Ukraine War Could Lead To Global Food Crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could lead to a global food crisis that will hit developing countries the hardest.

Reuters (By Dea Bankova, Prasanta Kumar Dutta and Michael Ovaska) reports that Guterres made the remarks at a press conference following a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson to discuss the security situation in Europe, recovery from the pandemic and the green transition on the day.

Guterres said the food crisis cannot be resolved effectively unless Russia’s manure and food production, and Ukraine’s food production can reach world markets again.

Guterres also called for swift decisions to counter the food crisis that could arise from the conflict, putting developing countries most at risk.

During his previous visit to Senegal, Guterres noted that the Ukraine crisis can have a dramatic impact on the economies of developing countries, and is aggravating a “triple food, energy and financial crisis” across Africa.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Russia and Ukraine are the world’s largest and fifth-largest wheat exporters, respectively. Together, they provide 19 % of the world’s barley supply, 14 % of wheat and 4 % of maize, making up more than one-third of global cereal exports.

Guterres’ remarks come as authorities in Zimbabwe have since attributed the soaring inflation in the southern African country to the war which started on the 24th of February when Russia invaded its neighbour.

Nope, that doesn't sound right. It's less than a Third. 38 divided by 3OO cannot be more than a Third. Misinformation will cause speculative demands

Wena Guterres go & tell the west naBiden to stop arming Ukraine & using it as a pawn while at the same time remove these sanctions on Russia which are hindering it from from trading with other nations while creating a u.s/west monopoly as you will come as saviours with food, oil etc when you eliminate competition from the east

@Truth, did the West invade Solomon Islands?

Truth 3 weeks ago

Putin is correct. Recently the West were bullying Solomon Islands after they did a deal with China which can allow China to build a naval base there. They said it would complicate security in the Pacific because its close to Australia. Talk of double standards. If Russia raises same issue in Europe they are told Ukraine is a sovereign state. They can do what they want.
