Opposition MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa has said he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. He posted on Twitter on Wednesday after his party had earlier that “ZANU PF thugs” had tried to assassinate him. Said Chamisa:
THEY NEARLY TOOK ME OUT..
He wants me killed and dead. They want blood and more blood. They missed by seconds because Our #Godisinit. Violence & assassinations won’t solve complex national challenges. I’m (in) Nyanga today meeting the community. Change must happen. The citizens are clear!
While Chamisa did not mention any name, some believe he meant President Emmerson Mnangagwa after MDC Alliance claimed that the assailants who attacked Chamisa in Masvingo and Manicaland were members of the ruling ZANU PF.
MDC Alliance claimed on Tuesday:
Our President s vehicles have just been attacked in an ambush outside Mutare. Gunshots have been fired and a bullet narrowly missed him. The ambush was organized by #ZANU militia & State Security agents . 12 cars have been trailing him all over Manicaland since morning …
His convoy has been subjected to endless police checkpoints throughout, with more than 15 between Mutare & Chipinge TownThe desperation of Emerson is palpable He is determined to ensure that Advocate @nelsonchami does not access our people Yet Birchnough, Chipinge, Chimanimani.
The MDC Alliance claims the attack on Chamisa is meant to instil fear in the general populace ahead of the 2023 general elections.
