South Africa Wins 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Title

South Africa won their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title as they beat hosts Morocco 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat.

Hildah Magaia scored twice in the space of eight minutes in the second half after the hour mark to hand Banyana Banyana their maiden WAFCON title.

Morocco scored their consolation goal through Rosella Ayane who was set up by Fatima Tagnaout in the 80th minute.

South Africa managed to cling to their lead despite the referee adding nine minutes of stoppage time.

The victory ended a run of five finals without success for Banyana Banyana, who completed the tournament in Morocco with a 100 per cent record.

South Africa also secured qualification to next year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Banyana Banyana were the only team to win all its matches at the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Below are their results:

  • South Africa 1-0 Botswana
  • South Africa 1-0 Tunisia
  • South Africa 1-0 Zambia
  • South Africa 2-1 Morocco

Meanwhile, the Copper Queens of Zambia claimed the bronze medal at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Casablanca on Friday with an upset 1-0 victory over the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the third and fourth place playoff.
