South Africa: Minister Zulu Says Zimbabweans Should Be In Their Country

South Africa: Minister Zulu Says Zimbabweans Should Be In Their Country

South Africa’s Social Development Minister and chairperson of the ANC’s international relations subcommittee, Lindiwe Zulu has said Zimbabweans residing in that country should be in their home country.

The senior ruling African National Congress (ANC) party official has added that all nations need to take responsibility for their citizens.

She made the remarks on Monday during a discussion on party policy documents. Zulu was reported as saying by jacarandafm.com:

When it comes to the issue of Home Affairs, and you were saying maybe we are sending Zimbabweans back to starve, as the African National Congress we believe that all countries need to take responsibility of their citizens.

First and foremost, we take responsibility of our citizens, we make sure that despite the challenges that we have of poverty, unemployment and inequality, we shouldn’t be having South Africans leaving South Africa with almost nothing,

… leaving South Africa and going to neighbouring countries to go and look for greener pastures when they aren’t even that much of the greener pastures that we can talk about.

About a million Zimbabweans are said to have gone to South Africa in search of greener pastures as the economy back home started crumbling.

Zulu’s remarks come amid tensions over South Africa’s decision to cancel Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs). Holders of the ZEPs will be deported at the end of this year if they fail to regularise their stay there, under new “strict” arrangements.

@Wenela. first of all just know that there have been parents. breadwinners with families basing their livelihood on their incomes. There are some who have lived in SA since the Mugabe regime (may his soul rest in peace). So ur political agenda can't make u say such harsh words. how would you feel if ur mother, brother or sister got burnt to death. What do u think is gonna change nyangwe vakadzoka kana imimi varimunyika makazvitadza nehuwandu wenyu. I not that into politics but the words u are saying akuto kuvanza CCC more than you know

@Bvananguy. It's common sense they ran away from misery created by Zanu so they cant come back and vote for the same devil who pushed them to refugee status in far away foreign lands where freedom is limited. Home is best. Think my friend! your big English words are simply to try and shield your shallow mindedness.

While I do agree with Minister Zulu that each country must strive to take care of its citizens, I would like to disagree with her in as much as making it public because it fuels xenophobic attacks against foreigners like what happened to Elvis Nyati.

What has irkes me is the fact that this subject has not been treated at Presidential level, but at ambassadorial level only.

the word diplomacy is a stranger to some of these SA so called ministers.

Worzell Gummidge 3 weeks ago

The issue has not been dealt with at the Presidential level because your Alligator President is not an accomplished diplomat. In fact he is a dolt who commands no respect & inspires no trust in other heads of state. He looks like a monster & hehaves like a monstrosity, together with that Dyslexic VP of his. Unlike Mugabe who was suave, dapper & diplomatic. He appoints Tafadzwa (Muramba) Mugwadi & Chinamasa who poked a sleeping giant by insulting the SA delegation that had come to help in 2020. Thats when this maltreatment of Zimbos in SA started. The ruining party preaches sovereignty, they should respect SA's sovereignty. My only concern is the safety of my fellow countryman in SA.

It is patently clear that the South African government has lost patience with Zimbabweans resident in their country. Whether this is cause or effect its neither here nor there.

Unemployment is rising in RSA and it's the duty of the government to provide employment for their own people. The numbers of foreigners residing an working in South Africa is high, and the perception that foreigners are depriving South Africans of job opportunities is real. No wonder Operation Dudula is gaining currency. No wonder vigilantism is rife in the South African transport drivers circuit.

At the same time the South African government is really fed up of Zimbabwe's inability to sort out their own political and economic problems. It is therefore understandable that the RSA government would want Zimbabweans to go back home and ontribute to sorting out domestic problems back home.

A million votes currently in RSA could make a difference, especially noting that they are either political or economic refugees who are unlikely to be for the status quo
