Sirizani Batau Speaks On The Rescue Mission

A truck driver, Sirizani Butau who was burnt while trying to rescue victims of an accident that happened at the 242km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway has received praises from many people for his heroic deeds.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police on Christmas said five people had perished in the accident while 60 others were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital after sustaining injuries of varying proportions.

Narrating the rescue mission, Batau said the deceased truck driver was still alive when he arrived at the scene. He said:

I am a truck driver I was injured while trying to rescue my fellow truck driver. I tried to rescue my friend as he was still alive when I arrived at the accident scene.

Meanwhile, survivors of the accident that happened on Christmas Eve are still in shock but grateful they are alive.

The accident occurred when a Beta bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker that then burst into flames. A survivor said:

I do not know what happened. I was just told that I was involved in an accident.

Another said the bus driver was speeding and encroached on the other lane, but failed to get back to his lane, resulting in the accident. Police said the driver was trying to avoid a drunken pedestrian. Another survivor said:

I just saw the bus encroaching on the other lane colliding with the truck.

Said another survivor:

The bus swerved three times after trying to avoiding a drunk guy. The bus was first to be in flames. We don’t know the number of the people who died trapped in the bus.

Manicaland provincial Medical Director, Dr Simon Nyadundu revealed that six of the 26 patients still admitted at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital are in critical condition, adding that 40 have been discharged. He said:

We still have 26 patients as some of them have been discharged. Two people died at the hospital to bring to total the number of death to five. Six are still seriously injured.

The government is taking care of people hospitalised as well as providing funeral assistance to the bereaved families. Other stakeholders have also chipped in to assist the affected people.

Mr Nemaisa and Mr Batau are heroes. Both men were an inch away from death 's doorstep. The only difference is Nemaisa's story is a bit old.

Thank you so much Mr Sirizani Butau or Mr Siruzanu Batau. You deserve a national honour of a high order to prove that the country still has people who consider others ahead of themselves and to encourage fellow citizens to act valiantly and nobly like you did! For a hero of such stature, the least news reporters could do is to give readers his correct name. Inga wani mbavha munodzinyora mazita adzo chaiwo wani.
