Sergio Aguero Has Announced His Retirement From Football

Barcelona striker, Sergio Kun Aguero has announced his retirement from professional football on health grounds.

The 33-year-old former Manchester City striker made the announcement at Cmp Nou this Wednesday.

Aguero only made five appearances for the Catalans since arriving and was forced off in his most recent with chest pains and breathing difficulties.

After a career spanning 427 goals in 786 games, he is expected to announce his retirement from the game. Pep Guardiola was in the crowd when Aguero announced his retirement. Said the Argentine after some time trying to compose himself:

This conference is to announce I have decided to stop playing professiional football. It is a very difficult moment. The decision I have taken for my health; the problem I had a month and a half ago. I have been in good hands with the medical staff. I made the decision 10 days ago after doing everything possible to have some hope of playing on. I am very proud for my career. I always dreamed of a professional career since the first time I touched a ball at five.

I want to thank Atletico Madrid who took a chance on me when I was 18 and Manchester City, everyone knows how I feel about City and how well they treated me there.

I will leave with my head held high. I don’t know what awaits me in the next part of my life. But I know I have people who love me. I will always remember the amazing things.

Sergio Aguero left Manchester City in the summer having broken their all-time scoring record, with 260 goals in 390 games, including 16 hat-tricks.

The Argentine is also responsible for arguably the Premier League’s most iconic moment, scoring with virtually the last kick of the 2011-12 season to seal a victory over Queens Park Rangers that earned Manchester City a first top-flight title since 1968 and denied fierce rivals Manchester United by virtue of goal difference.

Sergio Aguero’s great friendship with compatriot Lionel Messi meant a move to Barcelona was an attractive one after it became clear he would be allowed to leave Manchester City last summer.

He had won over City boss Pep Guardiola, who initially had concerns about the striker’s ability to fit into his style of play, but injuries limited Aguero’s playing time during his final season at Etihad Stadium.

But the switch to Barcelona went badly from the start. The club’s financial problems meant there were problems registering their new signings, including Aguero.

And those same issues led to the departure of Messi to Paris St-Germain.

When Aguero was eventually registered, he suffered a calf injury that kept him out until October.

After Sergio Aguero’s speech, the giant screen at the media conference played highlights of his career. From slick-haired teenage at Atletico to Nou Camp.
