SA Govt Official Hits Back At Prominent Zimbabwean Journalist

SA Govt Official Hits Back At Prominent Zimbabwean Journalist

A prominent Zimbabwean journalist, Haru Mutasa, who works for the Qatari-based television network, Al Jazeera, has raised concerns about the high crime rate in South Africa.

Mutasa set the cat among the pigeons on Sunday night after she claimed that Zimbabwe was “the safer nation” of the two.

Posting on Twitter, Mutasa said Zimbabwe is beautiful and “does not have the high crime rate” seen in South Africa.

She also claimed that some South Africans “wrongly believe the rest of Africa is invading them”. Wrote Mutasa:

Ouch South Africans – there I said it… Compared to #Zimbabwe your crime is on another level… Fight me all you want, you know am right

But we still love you – our lovely neighbours across the border, who wrongly believe the rest of Africa is invading them… Oops – I said that…

Besides upsetting South African social media users, Mutasa’s tweet caught the attention of Clayson Monyela, the Head of Public Diplomacy at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

Monyela noted that Mutasa had no statistical evidence to support her claims and also suggested that Zimbabwean nationals are contributing to the high crime rate in South Africa. Said Monyela:

What are you saying Haru? I’ll be a good diplomat and resist the temptation to ask you to produce credible stats from Zimbabwe to back up this tweet.

I’ll also not ask if some of your nationals are contributing to the crime in SA. Do better!

I agree with Mr Monyela here in Zim we have too many thieves like the one who stole money for a bulletproof car or the spokesperson who stole someone's husband.

@Logic, don't waste your breath about these ZANOIDS over the issue of bullet proof car. Elsewhere it has categorically shown how how much was raised by whom etc. It is very clear this was a wholly voluntary and private initiative devoid of public funds. Why anyone should waste time and effort about money that isn't theirs in the first place confounds me. People contribute towards beet parties but noone in their tight frame of mind wants an audit of how many beers, wines kitoko or acids were used and drunk.

All they are doing trying to paint CCC black to cover stinking ZANU corruption and looting of public funds

Both parties are wrong and right at the same time....SA crime rate is higher than Zim's..... It's safer to be in Zim than to be in SA..... however Zimbabweans in SA are also contributing to the crimes...copper cable thieves... Robberies..

As for the Bush lawyer forgive me ini hope you don't find this offensive eyy...but...do uu have any evidence about the misuse of funds intended to buy Chamisa's so called bulletproof car....the person responsible hasn't come to give the full report...So stop blaming CCC as a whole until you have facts not just a report you read here....As a 'lawyer' i thought uu argue with evidence and facts and right now you have neither.....

I really do not understand why almost all our locally trained journalists working for some of the largest media houses in the world seem to tone down issues when it comes to reports involving us. It's as if they are afraid of something, or have something to protect. Well, what they really need to protect is journalism, and nothing else.

We are not newsworthy. Any news item on Zimbabwe would be spiked by any self-respecting Editor.

How many people were burnt alive in Zimbabwe, compare that number with those burnt alive in South Africa.Only fools argue with numbers.Well said Haru👏. If you are a black foreigner in South Africa you are not safe, but if you are a white foreigner in South Africa you are safe.I rest my case.
