Rural Teachers To Go For An 'Early Holiday' Due To Poor Salaries

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) said that its members will go for an early holiday if the government failed to raise their salaries.

The strike is set to coincide with the ZCTU stay away on 22 July 2019. In a statement, the union said:

Teachers will be going for an early holiday if the government fails to address the salary crisis by Monday 22 July 2019.

Teachers are now incapacitated and can no longer render services.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ calls upon the government to urgently address the salary crisis to avert the looming school closure.

Teachers are currently earning US$30 which is way below the around $500 we used to earn. The current salary has reduced teachers and other civil servants to paupers.

ARTUZ demands our salaries negotiated in United States dollars to be converted using obtaining interbank rates.

We encourage all teachers to peacefully stay home beginning 22 July 2019 if our salaries are not reviewed.

We encourage teachers to engage in income-generating initiatives to support their families during these trying times.
