President Mnangagwa: Zimbabwe Has Enough Vaccines For Entire Population

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said Zimbabwe has procured enough vaccines to inoculate the entire population.

He speaks amid fears that the detection of Omicron, a new coronavirus variant, will result in masses seeking to be vaccinated en masse.

Mnangagwa made the remarks while addressing thousands of people gathered at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo this Friday. ZBC News quotes him as saying:

As the world fights the new Covid-19 variant, I want to call on all citizens who have to been vaccinated to avail themselves for the jab so that they get protected, as a country we have the luxury to call on those who have been vaccinated twice to come for the third booster jab so that they are protected as well.

His remarks come 3 days after the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun, indicated that China was donating one million more COVID-19 vaccine doses to the Southern African country. He said:

1 million doses of Sinovac vaccine, the 5th batch of China’s vaccine donation to Zim is coming very soon. Facing the challenge by Omicron, China & Zimbabwe are promoting cooperation on the Medical and Health Program proposed by China in #FOCAC.

Zimbabwe set an ambitious target of inoculating about 60 per cent of the total population by the end of this year to achieve herd immunity. As of the 2nd of December 2021, nearly 4 million people had received at least one jab suggesting that the country might fail to meet the target at this rate.
