Pope Francis Condemns Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

Pope Francis Condemns Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

Pope Francis on Sunday condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, calling the bombing of children’s hospitals and civilian targets a barbaric act.

The Pope’s remarks come amid heightened fighting between the Russian and Ukrainian forces for the 18th straight day since the 24th of February when Russian president Vladimir Putin authorised military action on Ukraine over alleged human rights abuses by the Kyiv government.

News agencies reported that the Pope made the remarks after the weekly Angelus prayers. He is quoted as saying the invasion of Ukraine is “unacceptable armed aggression” and must stop. He added:

In the name of God… stop this massacre.

Ukrainian cities risked being reduced to cemeteries.

News agency Reuters reported that at least 35 people were killed while 134 others were injured after the attack on a Ukrainian military base in Lviv.

According to regional governor Maksym Kozytskyy, the Russian planes allegedly fired around 30 rockets at the facility, adding that some of them were intercepted before they hit the targets.

The 360 square kilometres facility is one of Ukraine’s biggest and the largest in the western part of the war-hit country.

About two million Ukrainians are said to have left Ukraine to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.

Please note that Mboko's remarks are his own and do not reflect the thinking of the generality of the Ndebele people. We are a peace loving and non-tribalistic race.

That military site is humongous. An area covering a distance of 60km x 60km. It's like you travel from Harare to Marondera. Ummmmm. Put that area under irrigation you get a lot of cash crops to supply mbare musika or lot of housing units for home-seekers

Mark 5 months ago

If there's anyone who's unqualified to condemn anyone on issues of war here it's the many Popes that have led throughout history.
How many innocent people were killed all for the name of your so called "holy wars" and in the name of religion? No where in the bible had I very heard of Christians killing in the name of God but Catholics very much surprised me in slaughtering innocent Christians and calling them heathens.
Keep your robes and your cross to yourself Mr Pope and let Russia deal with Ukraine in peace

If your church :

☆ does not condemn violation of human rights, corruption and poor governance by the authorities,
☆ does not encourage its congregation to partake in democratic processes like voting and peaceful protests,
☆ takes sides in political issues,

Don't waste your time going to that church because all they want is your offering. You should really consider switching churches.

*Chronology to understand the crisis in Ukraine* (Between History and Geography)

- End of the war.
- Germany is defeated by the 4 allies (USA, USSR, France and Great Britain).

- Following misunderstandings between the 4 allies, they are divided into two blocks: 3 (USA + FR + GB) against 1 (USSR).

- The USA + FR + GB created the FRG and the USSR created the RDA.

- Under the leadership of the USA, the 3 Westerners created a military alliance (NATO) which brings together a dozen Western countries. To date, they are about thirty in total

- In response to NATO, the USSR created the *Warsaw Pact* in 1955 with the communist countries of Eastern Europe,

- The Berlin Wall falls.

- The USSR is further weakened especially since it has lost a lot of men and its economy is weakened. The crisis settles between the countries of the Soviet Union

- Many want to emancipate themselves, especially since they now see the rest of the world after the fall of the Berlin Wall. These countries are also influenced by Westerners who have more resources than the bankrupt USSR.

- The USSR is broken up and begins to lose its member states (15)

- After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a number of former Warsaw Pact countries changed sides and became members of NATO.

- Russia is created and keeps a strategic influence in some countries of the former Soviet Union.

- Russia is aware of the NATO threat. She will therefore "negotiate" an agreement with the Western leaders who give *oral* assurances to Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin on the non-expansion of NATO towards the East.

*NB: Gorbachev is making a big mistake by not requiring a written agreement*

- The principle is therefore: "*Not an inch to the East*" (Any expansion of the NATO area is not acceptable)

*Since 1999*

- Taking advantage of Russia's weakness, NATO continues to expand towards the East and is getting closer and closer to Russia.

- From now on the only "real" countries of the Ex. USSR which remain as a border between Russia and the Westerners therefore of NATO, it is Ukraine and Georgia.

- Boris Yeltsin's presidency was marked by financial and political crises, as well as corruption cases. Weakened by illness, he resigned on December 31, 1999

- Vladimir Putin came to power in 99. He is 47 years old. Younger, he tries to correct the mistakes of his predecessors and begins to straighten the economy of Russia. He tries a rapprochement with NATO which does not really work but he remains patient.

- A lot of countries from the former Soviet bloc are admitted into NATO: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria.

- Two other principals also want to join: Georgia and Ukraine which border Russia and above all have access to the Black Sea.

- These 2 countries are very strategic for Russia. If they join NATO, the US will therefore be face to face with Russia. So, we must prevent them by all means.

- Ukraine is "divided" politically into pro-Russia and pro-EU. Some want to stay under Russian influence and others under Western influence

- Part of the Ukrainian people are revolting to contest the re-election of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych and demand a rapprochement with the European Union.

- The civil revolution wins the pro-Russian president. And a pro-European Union regime took power between 2005 and 2010, bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union.

- A pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych regains power in Ukraine but a pro-EU "revolution" (Euromaidan) pushes him to resign and he flees to Russia in 2014.

- Russia no longer having its men at the head of Georgia and Ukraine, it will "abandon" its project of necessarily having a colt at the head of Ukraine. It will "cause" secessions with separatists in the localities of Ukraine close to its borders, particularly in the Donbass which includes two localities in the east of the country: Donets
