Police Sucked Into AFM Church Dispute

Police Sucked Into AFM Church Dispute

The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Zimbabwe has accused some police officers from Marlborough police station in Harare of siding with a breakaway faction led by Reverend Cossam Chiyangwa.

This comes after the police allegedly sat on a docket of one of Chiangwa’s supporters, Thomas Gwatidzo, who fired shots at AFM Faith Alive Assembly in Westgate last month.

Chiangwa reportedly sent Gwatidzo, who is a deacon, and other men to try and wrestle the church from his rival, Reverend Amon Madawo and his followers.

Gwatidzo reportedly fired shots at a guard from a local company, who had been contracted by the legitimate leadership of the AFM led by Madawo to guard the church.

The Madawo camp is alleging that some police officers, especially the officer-in-charge at Marlborough, are unwilling to act on the matter.

But Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said both factions reported each other and the cases are in the hands of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA). Said Nyathi:

You remember that there were two dockets as the factions counter reported each other.

One of the dockets is coming to court on 26 January next year, and the parties will be summoned.

However, the other one is still in the hands of the prosecution for further handling. It’s untrue that the police are sitting on the cases.

We want to appeal to the AFM people to do whatever they are doing lawfully. This is our message to the warring factions.

Police will not hesitate to arrest them if they do their things unlawfully.

Madawo told The Sunday Mail that they are yet to receive an update from the police on the case since the day they reported the matter. He said:

You can inquire about that from the officer-in-charge at Malborough police station. We made a report and there’s nothing we have heard since then.

Chiangwa said he has nothing to do with the work of the police and was relaxed about the whole issue. He said:

I have nothing to do with the police. I don’t work for the police. I only wait to be called since they are the ones who made a report to the police.

The church belongs to God. Why should I fight? God fights for himself.

I am relaxed at home and I have nothing to say to the police about their work.

The shooting incident allegedly took place on 12 November around 1.46 AM, a few hours after Chiyangwa and his faction had lost another legal battle to the Madawo faction.

The High Court had ruled the previous day that the Chiangwa faction had to vacate the church’s Westgate property that they had forcibly taken over in October.

PLEASE ALLOW ME SPACE TO WADE INTO THE APOSTOLIC FAITH MISSION [AFM] CHURCH DISPUTE.

THIS DISPUTE HAS TAKEN THE TWO RIVALRY SIDES TO HIGH COURT WHERE THE JUDGEMENT WENT IN FAVOUR OF REVEREND AMON MADAWO. REVEREND COSSAM CHIYANGWA'S FACTION REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE HIGH COURT JUDGEMENT.

THIS CHURCH LEADERSHIP DISPUTE IS COMMON TO MOST, IF NOT ALL, PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES IN AFRICA. PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES CONDUCT THEIR CHURCH WORK ON BUSINESS LINES.

THEY GENERATE MONEY SOME OF WHICH THEY INJECT BACK INTO THE CHURCH, BUT DEPOSIT THE REST INTO THEIR PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNTS AND EVENTUALLY BECOME VERY ENVIABLY WEALTHY.

MOST DO NOT HAVE HANDOVER/TAKEOVER STRUCTURES IN PLACE. LEADERS GROOM WIVES, CHILDREN AND RELATIVES TO TAKE OVER THE REIGNS OF THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP WHEN THEY PASS ON [DIE].

THEY ALSO CREATE STRUCTURES OF ELDERS WHO HELP THEM TO RUN THE CHURCHES. WHEN THE LEADER OR OWNER OF THE CHURCH DIES, THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS CHOOSE ONE THEIRS TO RUN THE CHURCH, BUT EITHER THE GROOMED SON, WIFE OR RELATIVE IMPOSES HIMSELF/HERSELF AS THE LEADER OF THE CHURCH. THIS SPLITS THE CHURCH LEADING TO ONE OF THE FACTIONS TO APPROACH THE COURTS.

DID YOU HEAR WHAT HAPPENED IN SCOAN CHURCH, TB JOSHUA'S CHURCH WHICH IS HEADQUARTERED IN NIGERIA ? ON TB JOSHUA'S DEMISE HIS WIFE TOOK OVER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE CHURCH. WE THANK HEAVENS. THERE WAS NO LEADERSHIP DISPUTE.

BACK HERE IN ZIMBABWE, WE HAVE TWO OR THREE PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES WHOSE LEADERSHIP DISPUTES WERE OR ARE STILL BEING HANDLED BY THE HIGH COURT.

WIFE, SON, DAUGHTER OR A CLOSE RELATIVE CAN NOT LET THEIR [BUSINESS ENTITIES] BE TAKEN OVER BY OTHERS. THEIR HUSBAND, FATHER OR BROTHER SWEATED TO ESTABLISH THAT BUSINESS VENTURE !!!!!

THOSE WHICH ORIGINATED IN THE WEST, ROMAN CATHOLIC, ANGLICAN, METHODIST, SALVATION ARMY, ETC FOLLOW PROPERLY LAID DOWN TAKEOVER STRUCTURES.

I AM SORRY, IAM NOT PRIVY TO HOW THEY RUN THEIR CHURCHES IN THE ARAB WORLD AND IN ASIA.

[TODAY'S MOTIVATIONAL DEVOTION]

BE STRONG AND DO NOT GIVE UP, FOR YOUR WORK WILL BE REWARDED. [2 CHRONICLES 15:7]

YOURS SINCERELY
