Police Issue Statement On Violence At University Of Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement following the violence that rocked the students’ election at the University of Zimbabwe this Friday. There were reports saying the police intervened and assaulted students. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police officers did not interfere during the Student Representative Council elections. Reads the statement:

ZRP PRESS STATEMENT

02ND JULY 2022

ALLEGED INTERFERENCE BY THE POLICE DURING THE UNIVERSITY OF ZIMBABWE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to set the record straight to the public that no interference was done by the Police during the University of Zimbabwe Student Representative Council elections held on 01st July 2022.

The Police was called in after some missiles had been thrown in the room where votes were being counted and validated, resulting in windows being damaged at the building.

It is on record that the Zimbabwe Republic Police has received complaints from both ZINASU and ZICOSU members on the violence which took place after the students had queried the delay in the announcement of results. The Police is investigating the case.

it is wrong for politicians to claim that the Police beat and stopped members of ZINASU from celebrating victory or their member being elected into the University of Zimbabwe Student Representative Council’s structures as President.

Politicians are reminded to stay in their spaces and not involve the police in issues which have nothing to do with policing.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to maintain law and order in the country for the benefit of the public and will not tolerate actions by politicians to cause alarm or send wrong information to the public on policing.

The Police is captured & conflicted.
It's narrative has become unreliable .
Remember what the Police said about Moreblessin & her lover's tiff?

I want to acknowledge and congratulate Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi for quickly explaining what exactly happened at the University of Zimbabwe at ZINASU/ZICOSU elections at the University of Zimbabwe. This must have happened with the Nyatsime disturbances. Citizens do have unanswered questions about Nyatsime disturbances. Why did ZANU PF Member of Parliament and a Councillor go to the funeral of a CCC activist, Moreblessing Ali's funeral and bar the would be attendees not attend, but to go to St Mary's. According to citizens this could have triggered the mayhems. Police is silent on this issue. Citizens in Nyatsime allege that properties belonging to both ZANU PF and CCC members were torched. But in their statements police confirm to have arrested accused persons from CCC Party only.
