The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has blocked the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) from holding rallies in Murewa and Umzingwane on Saturday, 25 February 2023.
CCC notified the Police of its plans to hold a cluster one-year anniversary celebration rally at Murewa council grounds on 25 February.
In a letter dated 22 February and addressed to CCC’s Murewa district elections officer, in response to the notification, Chief Superintendent M. Masvivi, said the venue had already been booked by another political party. Wrote Masvivi:
I acknowledge receipt of your notification dated 17/02/23 submitted through Murewa Police Station in terms of Section 7(1)(b) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act, Chapter 11:23 notifying of the above-stated public gathering.
Thank you for writing to us but be informed that the gathering can not go ahead as the venue has already been booked by another political party.
In the same vein, the booked venue is the property of Murewa Rural District Council and no consent was sought from them.
As such, allowing you to go ahead may result in clashes.
The Nelson Chamisa-led party also intended to hold a rally at Mabaweni Soccer Grounds in Esigodini, Umzingwane District, and dully notified the police.
Responding to the notification, the Officer Commanding Police in Umzingwane District, Chief Superintendent B. Ndlovu advised CCC’s Bheki Sibanda that the rally cannot go ahead as it coincides with a national event. Wrote Chief Superintendent Ndlovu:
It is your submission that you intend to hold a political rally at Mawabeni Soccer grounds on the 25th of February 2023 from 1000 hours to 1600 hours.
Your meeting coincides with a National event at the same venue. May you reschedule your meeting.
