Pilots At German Airline Lufthansa Strike Again This Week

Pilots at German airline Lufthansa have said they will strike again this week over a wage dispute, a labour union said on Tuesday.

The escalating wage dispute saw them striking last week forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights, Reuters reports.

The strike would affect pilots of both passenger and cargo divisions of the airline, said the union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), which groups more than 5,000 pilots.

Passenger pilots will strike on Wednesday and Thursday, and cargo pilots from Wednesday through Friday.

VC is demanding a pay rise of 5.5% this year and automatic inflation compensation after that.

Relevance to Zimbabwe:

The German airline resumed flying into Zimbabwe in March this year after more than two decades of absenteeism, according to Zimbabwetourism.net.

The airline flies daily between Frankfurt and Namibia and also flies three times into Victoria Falls.

Eurowings Discover of Germany which has made a commitment to start flying into Victoria Falls starting on March 30, 2022 intends to market Victoria Falls.

Lufthansa Group’s leisure airline, Eurowings Discover operates three weekly direct connections from Frankfurt to Victoria Falls, with return flights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with a short stopover in Windhoek.

The airline was one of several airlines to pull out of Zimbabwe between 2000 and 2008 as the country’s economy went into decline and political instability forced tourists to cancel travel plans to the Southern African country.
