Mnangagwa Off To Angola For Dos Santos Funeral

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday left Harare for Luanda, Angola, where he will join other leaders for a funeral service of former Angola leader Jose Eduardo dos Santos on Sunday, reported The Sunday News.

The funeral service is expected to precede a burial ceremony in the capital, Luanda, later in the day.

Dos Santos became Angola’s second president after the country attained political independence from Portugal in 1975.

He took over the presidency and leadership of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) from the late Agostinho Neto who died in 1979.

Dos Santos, who led the country until 2007, died last month in Barcelona, Spain. He would have turned 80 on 28 August 2022.

Meanwhile, Angola’s governing MPLA party has claimed victory in elections held on Wednesday as opposition parties rejected the results of the vote.

According to Al Jazeera, less than half of Angola’s registered voters turned out for Wednesday’s election.

President Joao Lourenco is seeking a second five-year term and extending the rule of MPLA, which has governed the southern African oil producer since independence from Portugal in 1975.

With more than 97 per cent of the vote counted, the election commission said on Thursday the MPLA was ahead with a 51 per cent majority.

MPLA’S longtime opponent, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) had 44.5 per cent.
