STATEMENT ON THE COMMOTION AT THE MEDIA CENTRE
The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora has disowned Kudzanai Mashumba, who claims to be a founding member of the original MDC and a current member of the opposition party.
Mashumba was on Thursday involved in a physical altercation with MDC-T youth assembly members, among them Yvonne Musarurwa, who became a Member of Parliament after the party expelled MDC Alliance legislators who had refused to submit to Mwonzora.
In a statement this Thursday, MDC-T spokesperson Witness Dube said party members were not involved in the altercation, yet video evidence shows Musarurwa, among other youths, manhandling Mashumba in full view of the media.
Pindula News is publishing the statement by Dube below:
The MDC-T has noted an incident that occurred at the Media Centre in Harare this morning. Whilst investigations are ongoing, we can fully confirm that our youths and their leaders were not involved in any form of violence.
Facts established thus far, show that the individual Kudzanai Mashumba flighted a notice on social media stating that MDC T and its leaders were going to address a press conference.
The notice was embellished with our party logos and the official portrait of our President Douglas Mwonzora, to give it an element of authenticity.
As a result, our youths and ordinary members of the public, together with members of the media attended the event.
According to information at hand, a commotion ensued when a member of the public wanted to disrupt the event and video evidence shows our youths, led by Hon. Yvonne Musarurwa intervening.
In fact, Hon. Musarurwa is repeatedly heard, and seen protecting Mr Mashumba from possible physical assault.
Our youths further enquired from Mr Mashumba why he was falsely representing MDC T.
As a general rule, our party normally holds press events at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House, which is a secure venue for the media, our supporters and general members of the public.
True to our party values on non-violence, our youths were able to protect Mr Mashumba during the commotion.
Our security department is currently investigating the intention and motives of Mr Mashumba, considering that he used our party logos and images under false pretence.
We strongly urge the Zimbabwe Republic Police to urgently investigate the matter and throw the book at all those that wanted to harm Mr Mashumba.
