Mapeza's Contract Ended At AFCON - ZIFA

Mapeza's Contract Ended At AFCON - ZIFA

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is set to recruit a substantive Warriors coach following the expiry of interim coach Norman Mapeza’s contract.

Mapeza replaced sacked Zdravko Logarusic in September last year and was initially tasked with reviving the Warriors’ 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign but the contract was extended further to cover the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon.

The former Warriors captain’s contract ended last week following the Warriors’ early exit from AFCON. ZIFA’s acting head of secretariat, Xolisani Gwesela, said:

Mapeza’s contract was for this tournament. It was an interim arrangement that was made between him and ZIFA and I can confirm the contract ended at the tournament.

However, it might sound too early now for me to comment further. We will advise the nation of the way forward at the appropriate time.

Mapeza, who is fully employed by premiership club FC Platinum, was being assisted by Taurayi Mangwiro, Mandla Mpofu and goalkeepers’ coach Energy Murambadoro.

I WANT TO THANK COACH NORMAN MAPEZA FOR COMING TO ASSIST ZIFA AT SHORT NOTICE. I WISH HIM WELL AT FC PLATNUM.

ZIFA MUST RECRUIT A SUBSTANTIVE COACH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. OUR NEXT AFCON QUALIFIERS ARE AROUND THE CORNER.

I PROPOSE THAT ZIFA ASK GOVERNMENT THROUGH SRC TO PAY NATIONAL TEAM COACH FOR THEM. AS IT STANDS AT THE MOMENT ZIFA HAS NO CAPACITY TO PAY GOOD SALARY WHICH ATTRACTS A GOOD FOREIGN COACH FROM EUROPEAN LEAGUES.

WE HAVE BEEN TO AFCON ON FIVE OCCASIONS. WE HAVE FALLEN AT THE SAME HURDLE. WE HAVE NEVER GONE INTO THE LAST 16 TEAMS.

MR SUNDAY "MHOFU" CHIDZAMBWA TOOK US TO AFCON TWICE, FOLLOWED BY RHAMAN GUMBO (ONCE), KALISTO PASUWA (ONCE) AND COACH NORMAN MAPEZA (ONCE).

I RECOMMEND THAT ZIFA EMPLOYEES A COACH FROM EUROPEAN LEAGUES WHO WILL BE PAID BY THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE ZIFA HAS NO CAPACITY TO PAY ATTRACTIVE SALARIES.

PREFERENTIALLY THEY SECOND NORMAN MAPEZA, MADHLA MPOFU OR TAURAI MANGWIRO TO HIM. LOCALLY BASED COACHES WILL THEN GET EXPERIENCED FROM THE TUTELAGE OF THE FOREIGN COACH.

ZIMBABWE DID IT WITH REIHNAD FABISCH, SUNDAY MARIMO CHIDZAMBWA AND RHAMAN GUMBO. WHEN FABISCH'S CONTRACT EXPIRED, SUNDAY CHIDZAMBWA TOOK OVER AS THE SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM COACH. WE QUALIFIED FOR AFCON FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2004.

FAILURE TO APPOINT A FOREIGN COACH THEN ZIFA SHOULD APPOINT NORMAN MAPEZA ON A CONTRACT WHICH COVERS TWO AFCON TOURNAMENTS.

The other coach who took Zim to AFCON was Charles Mhlauri and not Rahaman Gumbo and he also managed 3 points after beating Ghana in our last match

Before i comment let me put a point of correction to the bushy lawyer. Rahman Gumbo was part of players playing for the dream team, Fabisch's assistant was Roy Barretto. Going on,, for the past 5 or so editions of afcon, I had seen many countries Excel with local coaches ie Senegal&Nigeria. I opine giving a coach a long contract, taking part in friendly matches, good junior policy in which we see serious sponsorships for under 17,19,21&23, a professionally run ZIFA board, transparency&accountability on financial expenditure from that board so as to attract serious sponsors, non interference of government, building strong, durable, competitive&well funded local leagues among other things will see us cross to the promised land

I do not think Mapeza should be given another chance to lead the Warriors. Some of you suggest Normal should sign a longer contract. Mapeza understands local football. He has many titles under his belt. No question about that. When it comes to international football, he is a flop. Take a look at his performance with Platinum FC at Confederation of African Champions League (sic). He clashed out three consecutive times at the same level ( first round). His defeat at Afcon (first round) is no surprise.

Mapedza is a great coach. He needs to blend his skills so as to accommodate competitive international football. But, he's not ready for the senior team. His style of football which he uses to defeat Dynamos, CAPS United are far too old to be used outside Zim.
