Mapeza Fined US$1 200 For Criticising Referees

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has fined FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza and Manica Diamonds coach Johanisi Nhumwa US$1 200 each for criticising the performance of referees.

Mapeza criticised the performance of match officials after his side’s goalless draw with Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking during a post-match interview, Mapeza complained that the match official gave DeMbare too many “soft free kicks”.

Nhumwa also criticised referees in his side’s 1-1 stalemate with Herentals College at Vengere Stadium.

Under Order 13 of the Premier Soccer League Standing Orders and Fines, it is an offence for a player or coach to make comments in the media implying bias or questioning the integrity of match officials, thereby bringing the league or its sponsors into disrepute. The PSL said in a statement:

The Premier Soccer League has fined Manica Diamonds coach Johanisi Nhumwa and FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza for breaching PSL Rules and Regulations following statements on match officiating they made after the Castle Lager Matchday 21 Fixtures played over the weekend.

I believe your order number 13 should be revisited because the truth is that if the referee performs badly, there is no way coaches should just keep quiet. Why don't you ask yourself as to why Zimbabwe doesn't have a single referee who officiates anywhere outside our borders! The simply reason is because you allow your referees to do whatever decision they deem fit to do and forget that the international football community is looking at you. Right now I think the only notable referees that I remember well who knew what they were doing were the likes of Felix Tangawarima, Wilfred Mukuna,... just to mention the few yesteryear greats. Nowadays we have player number 12 for a certain team. They are not aware that it still backfires to them. This should be wake-up call for you. Are you not ashamed really?

While I want to register my support for PSL for taking drastic measures on the two soccer coaches, I would like in the same breath to urge the referees committee to work extra hard to improve our referees standard of refereeing.

The standard of refereeing in ZImbabwe is below par. This is why our referees do not participate at tournaments outside our borders.
