_Kukurigo Sport 30 JAN 2021:_ *ZC urges prison time for cheats, disgraced Taylor; FIFA buys Kamambo time*

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has urged authorities to make sporting fraud a criminal offence insisting Brendan Taylor, who represented Zimbabwe for 17 years, deserves harsh sanctions, including a custodial sentence.

Zimbabwe does not have legislation penalizing sport fraud. A Zimbabwe Sport Integrity Bill, approved by Cabinet in 2020, is still to be brought into law.

The Bill seeks to provide for elimination of sport corruption, doping, competition manipulation and illegal betting among other vices.

“Unfortunately, Taylor, who owned up to receiving bribes to fix matches as well as taking cocaine, has failed the sport, his nation and all the people, including impressionable children, who trusted and idolised him,” ZC said in a statement.

“…It is our view that harsh sanctions, including custodial sentences, will go a long way in helping cricket to curb one of the biggest threats to its credibility. Corruption has no place in cricket and those who engage in it deserve to be put out of the game and prosecuted to the full extent of a law specifically enacted to deal with match-fixing and related crimes.”

_*Zimbabwe teenagers fall in Trinidad*_

The Zimbabwe Under-19s suffered an eight-wicket defeat at the hands Ireland in an ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup Plate semi-final match played at the Queen’s Park Oval at Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Saturday.

Batting first, Zimbabwe made a slow start, with Matthew Welch run out for a nine-ball duck and captain Emmanuel Bawa trapped lbw by Matthew Humphreys for four. The side was bowled out for 166 runs in 48.4 overs.

With a small total to defend, Zimbabwe briefly had hopes of success when they took two wickets for only 10 runs on the board: Nathan McGuire was caught off Mcgini Dube for six, while Joshua Cox was lbw to the first ball he faced from Tendekai Mataranyika.

But there followed the partnership that decided the match, as the Irish captain Tim Tector joined the remaining opener Jack Dickson, and they mastered the bowling with an outstanding third-wicket partnership.

They completed the job to win the match after only 32 overs.

_*ZIFA Councilors yield to FIFA demands*_

ZIFA Congress delegates chickened out of their January 29 Extraordinary Congress, postponing it by three months, following FIFA’s intervention.

In a letter to ZIFA on Wednesday, FIFA Chief Member Association Officer Kenny Jean-Marie said the Felton Kamambo board should be given up to April 3 to convene the requested EGM before the ZIFA Congress delegates can lawfully convene the EGM themselves.

The January 29 meeting contravened ZIFA statutory provisions and would be seen as another violation if it went ahead, FIFA warned.

Twenty-seven ZIFA Congress delegates, with the backing of the Sport and Recreation Commission, sought to use the EGM to revoke the mandate of the Kamambo board over allegations of corruption.
