JUST IN: WHO Speaks On Use Of AstraZeneca Vaccine

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said there is no reason to stop the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, news agency AFP reports.

WHO speaks when a number of European countries including Austria, Italy Denmark, Iceland, and Norway have suspended the use of the vaccine after reports of severe “blood clots” among the people who had been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca.

Four other European countries, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Luxemburg, have also suspended the use of AstraZeneca vaccines while over 17 European countries have received about one million jabs while Thailand and Bulgaria said they would delay the rollout of the shot.

AstraZeneca is an Anglo-Swedish company that developed the COVID-19 vaccine with Oxford University.

WHO said its vaccines advisory committee was examining the safety data coming in stressing that no causal link had been established between the AstraZeneca and clotting to warrant a ban on its use.

The UN health agency also said that after the injection of more than 260 million coronavirus vaccine doses so far around the world, no deaths had yet been attributed to a Covid-19 jab.

Denmark, Norway and Iceland paused the use of the AstraZeneca jab as a precaution after isolated reports of recipients developing blood clots.

A range of health authorities around the world including the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the WHO have insisted the jab is safe for use. WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris told reporters at a briefing in Geneva:

AstraZeneca is an excellent vaccine, as are the other vaccines that are being used.
Yes, we should continue using the AstraZeneca vaccine.

We must always ensure that we look for any safety signals when we roll out vaccines, and we must review them.
But there is no indication to not use it.

Harris said over 268 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines administered since the start of the pandemic and no causes of death have been found to have been caused by Covid-19 vaccines to date.
